Frequently Asked Questions

What is electrical test and tag? Test and tag is the process of visually inspecting and electrically testing portable electrical equipment to ensure it is safe for use. A tag is then attached to the item indicating its safety status, test date, and the date for the next scheduled test. This is essential for preventing electrical hazards and ensuring workplace safety compliance.

Is test and tag a legal requirement in Australia? Yes, it is a requirement for compliance with Work Health and Safety (WHS) legislation across Australia. While the specific testing frequency depends on the environment and risk level, all businesses have a duty of care to ensure the safety of employees and visitors from electrical injury. For high-risk environments like construction, demolition, and mining, testing is strictly mandatory.

What items need to be tested? Generally, any electrical item that has a flexible power lead and plugs into a power point needs to be tested. This includes: Portable appliances (kettles, irons, toasters) Computers, printers, and chargers Power tools and extension leads Portable RCDs (safety switches) Three-phase equipment

How often does equipment need to be tested and tagged? The frequency varies depending on the type of equipment and the work environment, as outlined in the AS/NZS 3760 Standard. Construction/Demolition: Every 3 months. Manufacturing/Commercial Cleaning: Every 6 months. Offices/Low-Risk Environments: Up to every 5 years (if no safety switch present). Hire Equipment: Every 3 months or before each hire.

Who can perform test and tag? Testing and tagging must be performed by a "competent person" as defined by the AS/NZS 3760 standard. This person must have acquired the necessary knowledge and skills through training, qualification, or experience to use a Portable Appliance Tester (PAT) and interpret the results. In Queensland, an additional Restricted Electrical Contractors Licence is required if offering test and tag as a commercial service.

What happens if an item fails the test? Any equipment that fails the test must be removed from service immediately. A durable "Danger" tag should be attached, warning people not to use it, and the item must be repaired by a licensed electrician or disposed of properly.

What records need to be kept? A register of all equipment. A record of all formal inspections and tests, including test results and dates. A repair register. A record of all faulty equipment and corrective actions taken.
